Elyrians: Bring Back a Sense of Community to Your Neighborhood

The City of Elyria and the Elyria Neighborhood Block Watch Group, in partnership NewsChannel 5 and the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, invite you to join us Saturday April 5 from 9:30am – Noon at Elyria City Hall second floor Council Chambers – 131 Court Street to learn about how to start and maintain an active Neighborhood Block Watch Group and how to avoid becoming a victim of scams and identity theft.

THE PREMISE
Neighborhood Block Watch Groups enable people to get more involved and help make their neighborhoods safe by serving as additional eyes and ears for the police and by sharing important information among neighbors. Neighborhood Block Watch Groups focus not only on reducing crime but also on helping neighbors connect with their communities and to get to know each other as well as their elected officials and police officers.

THE APPROACH
  • In an effort to increase the number of Neighborhood Block Watch Groups, the City of Elyria and Elyria Neighborhood Block Watch Group are collaborating with WEWS NewsChannel 5 and their Building Better Neighborhoods: Keeping You Safe Where You Live program to raise awareness and interest
  • While we are focusing on 5 neighborhoods to begin or renew an active Neighborhood Block Watch Group, all Elyria citizens are encouraged to form a Neighborhood Block Watch Group if there is not already an active one in place
  • This program will present information on how to set up and maintain an active Neighborhood Block Watch Group as well as provide important safety tips
  • Once participation from the neighborhoods has been achieved, residents will have an opportunity to vote on newsnet5.com which of Neighborhood Block Watch Group will become a NewsChannel 5 “featured” group
  • In addition to the Elyria Neighborhood Block Watch signage, the featured group will receive a NewsChannel 5 Building Better Neighborhood sign for their area
