Due to the life-threatening frigid weather conditions
expected next week, Warming Shelters and transportation will be offered to Elyrians
beginning Tuesday evening January 29 and ending Friday February 1 at Noon. The Elyria Warming Shelters are a combined
effort of St. Mary Catholic Church, The City of Elyria, First Student, Elyria
City Schools, The American Red Cross, and various food establishments.
To help Elyrians in need of access to the Warming Shelters, the
City of Elyria, First Student and Elyria City Schools will offer a bus loop
pickup at seven locations throughout the city.
The loop will begin at 7:00pm on Tuesday and will run 10:00am and 7:00pm
Wednesday and Thursday and 10:00 am on Friday.
The pick-up locations include at the corners of the following: 15th and Middle Avenue, Cleveland
Street and White Oak Drive, Abbe Road and Hilliard, Lake Avenue and Bell
Avenue, Lake Avenue and Lowell Street, West Ridge and Turner, and East Park
Recreation Center on Prospect Street.
The Warming Stations will have cots, blankets, warm
beverages and food. Residents may bring
non-aggressive pets that are in cages or leashed and must personally
attend to them. Volunteers from St. Mary
Catholic Church and the Mayor’s Office on Volunteer Engagement will be
supporting the sites. Elyria Safety
Forces will also be providing wellness checks and transportation as needed. For further information call the Elyria Mayor’s
Office at 440-326-1402.
