Elyria residents are encouraged to visit one of the following healthcare enrollment providers or log on to the Health Insurance Marketplace at healthcare.gov . To help Lorain County residents learn about the resources available to them and how to enroll by Dec. 15 so their healthcare coverage can start Jan. 1, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region 5 Director Kathleen Falk visited with Elyria Mayor Holly Brinda and other local officials to share information at the Lorain County Health & Dentistry in Elyria on December 4. “The facts show that the insurance is very affordable with about 70 percent of the nation who purchased on the Marketplace getting it for $100 or less a month,” said Director Falk. “The process is easier and shorter than it was last year, and there are now 16 providers on the Marketplace in Ohio, which is one of only a few states in the nation to have that many providers.”
“Maintaining one’s health is vitally important to the future of our city. We recognize that not everyone is presently covered in such a way as to protect themselves in the event of illness or injury or even more important, to maintain a healthy life," said Brinda. "Open enrollment gives citizens an opportunity to secure quality healthcare at an affordable cost. We encourage all people to sign up for the coverage they need during this opportunity."
In the first two weeks of open enrollment some 765,135 people selected plans for Marketplace coverage nationally, more than 1 million people spoke with call center representatives, and 5,459,731 unique users visited HealthCare.gov.
"The local health departments along with the community partners have gotten together to create a Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP)," Dave Covell, Lorain County Health Commissioner. "One of the main areas of the CHIP addresses access to care which is directly tied to having health insurance. The Lorain County General Health Districts goal is to get residents the health services they need so that they can live a healthy life."
“Over 10 million more people have health insurance today than did a year ago,” Falk said. “What a tremendous difference this makes in their lives. But we know there are many more still without—and we are seeing that almost 90 percent of those without insurance do not know that until Feb. 15 they have the opportunity to obtain quality, affordable health care.”
