Dear Elyrians,
With all the rain and water-related issues over the past few
days, many of you have questions about what the City is doing to address your
concerns. Here are some answers. On January 1, 2015 the City of Elyria will
initiate a new storm water management program.
It will help the City comply with mandated Federal and State EPA
National Pollutant Elimination System permit regulations and water quality requirements. The steps we will be taking will also help us
better manage stormwater to improve water quality, reduce flooding, and protect
lives and property.
I know the flooding issues many of you are experiencing are
very frustrating. I ask for your patience
as these are circumstances that my administration inherited and we are trying
to find cost-effective ways to address the concerns. The over $100 million in investment needed to
address these issues will come from a stormwater utility fee and every grant we
can secure to help ease the cost to taxpayers.
While none of us want to pay more fees, a small fee will be
necessary. I will be sharing a lot more
information regarding Elyria’s new Stormwater Utility Management Program in the
next few weeks. In the meantime, I
appreciate your patience and urge you to report your flooding issues to the
Waste Water Treatment Plant at 366-2211.
We are mapping all flooding issues to help us identify trends and
prioritize projects. Your input is
needed and appreciated.
