Kerstetter 5k and ACS Relay for Life

It’s not every day that we are granted the will or the ability to reflect upon a tragedy and use it  to positively affect our lives, but this weekend in Elyria we all have two chances to make a real difference.  Already in progress, the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is taking place through the night at Elyria Catholic High School.  It is a time to celebrate the lives of those we have lost and encourage those who are still fighting, and proceeds from the event go directly to fight this disease that has had an effect on the lives of everyone.  Teams of volunteers and City of Elyria Employees will be on the track all night long, and even if you can’t make it out tonight, any support is welcome d and appreciated today, tomorrow, or throughout the year. More information is available here: Relay for Life Facebook Page

Tomorrow morning brings the 2014 Kerstetter 5K Walk/Run.  Officer James A. Kerstetter, a 15-year veteran of the Elyria Police Department, was killed in the line of duty on March 15, 2010.  He had a tremendous impact on our community as a person and a police officer, and that presence continues to educate, inspire, and drive us all of us to this day.  Saturday, July 12, 2014 is a chance to remember him, honor him, and raise money for a good cause.  Proceeds from the event benefit the James A. Kerstetter Scholarship fund.

Preregistration is closed, but you can still register Saturday morning starting at 7am, the walk begins at 8am and the race at 8:30.  More information can be found here: Kerstetter 5k Official Website.

Finally, here's an update on the Route 57/49th Street Bridge project getting under way by Miday Mall:

SR 57 Corridor Project
Update on work for the week of July 14

ELYRIA (Friday, July 11, 2014) – The Ohio Department of Transportation District 3 provides the following update on the State Route 57 corridor improvement project in the City of Elyria:
  • State Route 57: Two lanes remain in each direction between the Midway Mall Boulevard and the Ohio Turnpike. The contractor will work within the median during this phase of reconstruction, and traffic will remain in this pattern through the Fall.
  • Midway Mall Boulevard/Tillotson Street: The work zone is in place on the southern half of the intersection. The contractor continues to remove the existing pavement, relocating fire hydrants, and placing aggregate base.
There is no longer access to the Midway Mall from Tillotson Street. Midway Mall customers will have access from the entrance east of Tillotson Street or through Travelers Lane, west of Red Lobster. This will remain in place through late August.

Leona Street/Midway Mall Boulevard: Reconstruction continues in the northwest quadrant of the intersection. One lane of traffic will be maintained at all times through the intersection.

Griswold Road: Beginning the week of July 14, Columbia Gas will work to move utility lines on Griswold Road. This work is expected to take approximately four weeks. The reconstruction of the southern half of Griswold Road has been postponed until mid-August, upon completion of the utility relocation.

Residents, business owners, and motorists are encouraged to contact ODOT District 3’s Public Information Office with any questions or concerns about this work at D03.PIO@dot.state.oh.us.

Exercise caution in work zones and pay attention to slower moving traffic as it merges in to an open lane. For statewide construction information visit Ohgo.com. For more information on these upcoming traffic changes on SR 57, visit www.dot.state.oh.us/districts/D03/Pages/LOR-57-Improvement-Project.aspx.
